On Thursday, September 30th, I was contacted by the property manager of the Fine Arts Building on 7th St. in downtown LA. She said the lobby showcases were available for us to have a show there. We would hang the show on October 13 and they would host a reception on October 14, the night of The LA City Art Walk. This was presented to the group on Saturday at the BAGSC meeting and everyone thought it was a good opportunity.
Each member may enter four paintings, with no particular framing requirements. There is no entry fee to enter the show. An email blast will be sent to all BAGSC members with the show entry form and delivery details. Members must fill out the show entry form and email or send them to Leslie Walker and Deborah Shaw by Thursday, October 7, 6 pm. All paintings must have show identification labels in place on the back of the painting. Paintings may be delivered to Tania Norris, Leslie Walker, or Deborah Shaw by October 10. Paintings should be in portfolios or boxes with cardboard dividers with the member’s name written on the outside of the portfolio.
The show will be up until the middle of the second week in November. We will provide email addresses of all participants who will handle all sales and delivery after show is taken down. There will be no percentage of sales taken by the gallery.
This is a wonderful opportunity to participate in the LA Art Walk and exhibit in a beautiful, historic LA building!

The Rancho Los Alamitos Gardens in Long Beach have invited us to participate in their “Garden, Gourmet and Gallery Series” Autumn Events on

The day will feature a lecture on Perennials and Bulbs by John Schoustra, Landscape Architect, and, of course, the drawings and paintings of the Botanical Artists Guild of Southern California.
Members of BAGSC who wish to display and sell their work, prints, cards, etc are welcome to sign up now. Participating members will be required to arrive at 9:00 am to set up, stay until closing and assist in take-down. Rancho Los Alamitos will provide a box lunch for those participating. They would also like to have some artists painting and demonstrating. This will be a good opportunity to meet some new people and introduce ourselves. Rancho Los Alamitos is a lovely garden and house where our work will show off nicely.
If you would like to join us, email your name and agreement to work this event to Leslie Walker. Include the number of paintings, etc. you plan to bring, and if you wish to demonstrate. Also we will need to bring our own display/sales things and take care of our own sales. Additional details about sales, etc., will be available at the end of September/beginning of October.
As you may have read in the BAGSC blog, through the efforts of member Diane Daly we have been invited by Charlene Baldwin, Dean of Leatherby Libraries at Chapman University, to hold an exhibit of members’ paintings. The exhibit will be on the second floor of the Chapman University Leatherby Libraries building in the city of Orange and will run from the first week of January through February 21st.
For the upcoming Chapman University Botanical Exhibition, we envision a display of botanical illustrations that show a wide variety of botanical subjects and illustration techniques from our guild members. We would like the exhibit, along with lectures and demonstrations, to educate the community about botanical illustration, its history and role in science, and its evolution as an art form.
The members of the exhibition committee are Diane Daly, Akiko Enokido, Irene Horiuchi, Clara Josephs, Deborah Shaw, and Leslie Walker.
IMPORTANT DATES
NOVEMBER 12: Digital submission ends.
YES! ALL PAINTINGS that will be in the January-February show must be FINISHED early in November! That date is driven by holiday closures on campus that effect the Risk Management Department, and printing schedules. November 12th is the LAST day to send in digital photographs or scans of the art you are submitting. That means you must FINISH your paintings in time for you to have the scan or photograph received by mail OR emailed by November 12th!
No submissions received after that date will be accepted for the show.
You may submit paintings that have been in other shows or were not recently completed, so look through your portfolio for your strongest efforts!
At this time, we believe we will have room for four paintings per member; so aim for that. As we know more about the exhibition area, we may need to adjust that number.
NOVEMBER 19: Acceptance Notification
You might want to hold off on framing your entries until the committee notifies you by email on November 19th you that your submissions will be in the show.
THIS IS NOT A JURIED SHOW. However, if there are space constraints, then the committee’s objective will be to display the greatest variety of subjects. So, we will look for those plants that are less frequently painted.
FIRST WEEK OF JANUARY: Installation of exhibit during campus recess.
WEEK OF FEBRUARY 7: Reception
The reception will be held sometime this week (after the show opening). Chapman University has a wonderful caterer who will provide refreshments. This should be a lovely event to which you will want to invite friends and family.
Week of FEBRUARY 21: Show closes and paintings removed.
OTHER IMPORTANT INFORMATION
Deborah has again agreed to arrange for the printing of postcards. She plans to have them to you after Thanksgiving, so you can include them with your holiday mailings.
To unify the appearance of the show, we are requiring that all submissions be framed according to ASBA guidelines, using simple L frames with Plexiglas and in the lightest colored wood. Leslie will have more information about frame sources and will bring a sample frame to the next BAGSC meeting on October 2.
The University allows for the sale of original works, and does not ask for participation in the sale. Artists who wish to sell will be asked to provide their email or other form of contact so the buyer can contact the artist. The artist and the purchaser will arrange for the transfer of sold artwork after the close of the show.
Again: all paintings in this show MUST be digitally submitted via email no later than NOVEMBER 12th! SO plan and paint NOW for this wonderful opportunity!

Through the special efforts of member Diane Daly, BAGSC has received an exciting invitation from Charlene Baldwin, Dean of Leatherby Libraries at Chapman University to conduct an exhibition of members’ works sometime shortly after the new year. Chapman University is located in central Orange County, off the 55, 57, or 22 freeways. This would be the first BAGSC exhibition to be held in Orange County.
On June 15, Leslie Walker, Diane Daly, Akiko Enokido, and Clara Josephs met with university officials to begin discussing arrangements. Leatherby Libraries is located in the center of the campus, with parking nearby. A beautiful, four-story building, it has elegant lecture and exhibition spaces, which are alarmed and insured.
The exhibition space is approximately 60 feet long, and paintings can be double hung. That gives us ample space to showcase the talents of our members. The thinking at this time is to request that all paintings be framed in light natural wood, to unify the appearance of the exhibit. There is room for lectures and demonstrations in an area adjacent to the exhibition area that is beautifully filled with abundant natural light. The library has three locked, rolling display cases which we can use to show botanical books or artist’s equipment.
The university has catering which will provide refreshments for an opening reception.
While the university has a professor of botany whose interest is in native California plants, the thinking at this time is to open the exhibit to all botanical subjects.
The exact date for the exhibit opening has not been set, but will most likely be in late January or early February and run for 4-6 weeks. However, now is the time to get planning and painting.

“Seeing the Details: An Exhibition of Southern California Botanical Art”
April 7 from 5-7pm: Opening Reception
The Botanical Artists Guild of Southern California will be exhibiting their work in The Arboretum Library, April 1 to June 30, 2010. Botanical accuracy and artistic merit will ensure a detailed and breath-taking view of Southern California plants, both native and ornamental. The show will be juried by Olga Eysymontt, Guild Member and Botanical Illustration Instructor at The Arboretum, James E. Henrich, Arboretum Curator of Living Collections, and Susan C. Eubank, Arboretum Librarian. Many works will be available for purchase, with a percentage of sales supporting The Arboretum Library. An opening will be held with the artists, Wednesday, April 7. Watch The Arboretum website for the reception announcement. The Guild is dedicated to encouraging the development of botanical art and the promotion of public awareness of this very old and established artistic tradition. Guild members are committed to improving their artistry and technical abilities through supporting and sponsoring workshops with local experts and visiting lecturers in areas such as drawing and painting botanical subjects, botany, calligraphy, and resources.
Free with admission.
Mark your calendars! Once again, BAGSC will be participating in the LA Garden Show at the Los Angeles Arboretum from April 30 – May 2. All botanical originals and prints are welcome.
Eligibility requirements include:
- Be a BAGSC member in good standing.
- Submit your entry fee of $35.00 per person for up to four (4) hanging framed entries (prints or originals) by the entry form date. Loose prints, cards, bookmarks, etc. are included in this low entry fee.
- Original work should have been created within the past two (2) years. Prints of the original art may be exhibited in the show and may be for sale.
- Volunteer for shifts at the sales table, for show set-up or break down, or for other show-related activities. For those unable to volunteer, an additional fee of $50.00 or five percent of sales, will be charged whichever is greater.
- Sign and submit a waiver of liability with your application (included in the entry package).
- Read and comply with framing and other requirements from the entry package.
Some important dates to remember:
- Deadline for receipt of show entry forms and checks to Norma: March 15, 2010
- Art drop-off at the Arboretum: Thursday, April 29, 2010 between 9:30 am and noon
- Show closing: Sunday, May 2, 2010 at 5:00 pm
- Art pick-up: Sunday, May 2, 2010 between 5:00 pm and 6:30 pm.
All BAGSC members are encouraged to submit to this non-juried show, even if you haven’t shown before. The LA Garden Show is a wonderful way to show your work and get feedback. The show occurs right before Mother’s Day, so sales of cards, bookmarks and prints are always brisk. The Submissions Guidelines and Show Information will be emailed to all members. BAGSC Members have the opportunity to show their work and demonstrate botanical art during the second annual, two-hour City of Newport Beach WaterMiser Workshop on March 11, 2010 at the Newport Beach Central Library, Newport Beach, CA.
The Keynote Speaker will be Ron Vanderhoff, Master Gardener of Rogers’s Gardens in Newport Beach. This free event will focus on conserving precious landscape water and demonstrating how to grow a beautiful, thriving garden with limited water resources. Participants will be able to: learn about Newport Beach conservation efforts; ask questions of Ron Vanderhoff, Master Gardener, Rogers’s Gardens and Wendy Proud, Master Gardener, Mountain States Wholesale Nursery; and find out how to transform gardens with California Friendly® and native plants. Light refreshments will be served by Baja Fresh.
Framed originals or prints will be displayed in the presentation area during the workshop. We will also have a table in the courtyard in the vendor fair area to display additional originals and prints, and demonstrate botanical art. We are able to sell prints, cards, bookmarks, etc. at our table. Paintings and illustrations of California Friendly®, native plants, or any other drought-tolerant (i.e., Australian or South African natives) are preferred, but other plants are acceptable as well. There is no entry fee.
We will be joined by Tania Marien, who is bringing ArtPlantae. The vendor fair (so far) includes:

Set-up is on March 11 and will begin no later than 5:30 pm.
Prizes will be raffled off at the end of the workshop. If you have any materials you are willing to donate to the raffle, please let us know.
Although this is not a formal exhibit, and artwork viewing may not be optimal, this is a wonderful opportunity to provide educational outreach.

BAGSC members have the opportunity to have their artwork printed on promotional artwork postcards at trade prices in conjunction with our show at the LA Arboretum Library. (Please see the call for entries further down on our BAGSC Blog.) The postcards are on heavy white stock, full color on the front, with a full, glossy, varnish on the color side. The back will be printed one color with the information about the LA Arboretum Library show. You may also order your postcards with a blank back, and only your artwork on the front.
Here’s how it works
1. Send your high-resolution (at least 300 dpi) color-corrected scans of your artwork to Deb on or before 2 March, 2010.
2. Include your name as you want it to appear on the postcard front, along with: the name of the painting (please check spelling carefully, what you send is what is printed); the media (if you want to list that); and, the date of the painting for the copyright line. For example, the information that might appear on the front of the card would be:

3. Deb will email you a PDF proof of the front and back of your card on or before 8 March. All approvals are due by noon on 9 March, and the postcards will go to the printer.
4. Postcards will be handed out at the BAGSC meeting at Deb’s house on Saturday, 20 March.
Printing specifications and pricing
Final printed size: 4″ x 6″. Your image can be printed in a horizontal or vertical format. The information about the LA Arboretum Library show will be printed in a horizontal format.
Color(s) and varnish: Full color on the front; the color can bleed off four sides of the card if desired. Printing of black-and-white artwork (graphite or pen-and-ink) will still be done on a full color press, and may have the appearance of a slight color tint. The artwork side of the postcard will have a full coating of a high gloss (UV) varnish.
Paper: 14 pt, white card stock, to meet Post Office regulations for mailing.
Optional copy on the back: All of the backs will be printed with the same information about our LA Arboretum Library show and the reception invitation. You can also elect to have no printing on the back (i.e., the back will be blank), but the cost will be the same.
Costs: The cost below includes printing and shipping to Deb’s house. Deb will set up the artwork for the printer at no charge. Orange County sales tax of 8.75% will be added to the amounts below. Checks should be made out to BAGSC, and received by Deb Shaw by 9 March.

Scans are not required for judging, only for publicity and/or custom postcards if you would like them. Judging will be done from the original artwork, which is due March 14, 2010 (entry forms are due February 27, 2010).

Subject: Botanical specimens.
Media: Two-dimensional original botanical art or illustration.
Submissions: Up to 3 works of art that are the sole creation of the exhibiting artist. All media must be hand applied by the artist.

Fees: $35.00, for all entries (1 – 3 originals)

Sale of Works: Works may be for sale but may not be removed until the close of the exhibition. 35 percent of the sale price will be retained by The Arboretum. All participating artists may also have prints, note cards, etc. for sale with 35 percent of the sale price retained by The Arboretum. Accepted artwork must be delivered to The Arboretum by March 14, 2010; all additional sale items (prints, note cards, etc.) must be delivered to The Arboretum by March 31, 2010.
Publicity: Scans are requested for judging, which may be used for publicity purposes. Artists may also be interested in ordering postcards with their own artwork advertising the show at a cost of $30 per 100 cards. The California Native Plant Society is now preparing for the CNPS 2009 Conservation Conference: Strategies and Solutions January 17-19 2009 at the Sacramento Convention Center, Sacramento California.
Among the many objectives of this conference is to “foment a greater understanding and appreciation of California’s unique flora”. A juried botanical art competition and exhibition will contribute to this goal.
- 1st Prize – $750, artwork published in Fremontia, & 2 complimentary tickets to Conservation Conference banquet.
- 2nd Prize – $500, artwork published in Fremontia, & 2 complimentary tickets to Conservation Conference banquet.
- 3rd Prize – $250, artwork published in Fremontia, & 2 complimentary tickets to Conservation Conference banquet.
“Conference Choice” - (voted on by conference attendees) Published in the CNPS 2009 Conservation Conference: Strategies & Solutions Proceedings.
Criteria Artists are invited to enter original artwork in any two-dimensional medium that reflects the beauty and uniqueness of California flora and adheres to high standards of botanical accuracy. All entries must depict plants indigenous to California (no introduced plants, please!). They must be botanically correct and species specific, accompanied by the scientific name.

It’s time to get your entries ready for the LA Garden Show!
This year we’re doing something different: we’ll be a part of the LA Garden Show Marketplace and not at Peacock Corner (formerly known as The Oak Room). In addition the show will be on view only for the days of the LA Garden Show (Thursday May 1, 2008 to Sunday May 4, 2008). As a result of the changes we will need less “Show Sitting” although the number of Show sitters may need to be increased as we may (we hope) see increased business.
Eligibility Requirements:
The show is open to all BAGSC members who wish to enter original work or prints of original work which have been created within the past two (2) years. As always, members also have the option of selling prints, notecards, etc. of their work. Participating members also need to give time at shifts at the show or participate in other show-related activity.
Subject matter:
Anything botanical, including realistic portrayals of flowers, plants, fruits and vegetables or studies in botanical art. The primary subject matter must be botanical, although insects or animals may be shown.
Media:
Watercolor, Graphite, Pen and Ink, Colored Pencil, etc.
Show Entry Deadline: March 12, 2008

The LA Arboretum is planning a bigger and better show than ever before. See you there!
ASBA, Opening 2009 (Tentative Date)
To increase public awareness of plants that are threatened with extinction here and around the world, the ASBA will be collaborating with the World Conservation Union (IUCN) and the Center for Plant Conservation to produce an exhibition of endangered plants. This juried exhibition will include approximately 45 original artworks in 3 framed sizes: 24” X 18”, 30” X 24”, and 40” X 34”. These sizes can be horizontal or vertical, and the work need not be for sale. “Losing Paradise?” promises to be an exciting project that will build relationships between artists, institutions, conservation organizations, scientists, and horticulturists.
