(as brought to the meeting by Janice)

4 oz box of Reese’s wild rice — cooked (see side of the package)
1 bell pepper-diced
1 bunch scallions-chopped
1 small red onion-diced
8 oz pecan pieces
6 oz Ocean Spray Craisins
1/4 cup rice wine vinegar
1/4 cup olive oil

Mix all the ingredients together and refrigerate overnight. It tastes better if it is made a day ahead.

(submitted by Kathy, from “Frieda’s Fiestas”)

¾ cup sugar (for caramel)
1 quart milk (whole milk is best)
1 cup sugar
1 vanilla bean, split lengthwise
4 egg yolks
6 eggs, slightly beaten

Cook the ¾ cup sugar to caramelize, then pour into earthenware mold or other mold (an 8” cake pan works well) turning it around so that the bottom and sides of the mold are covered with caramel.

Heat milk with the cup of sugar and the vanilla for about 10 minutes. Let cool slightly, then add the egg yolks and beaten eggs. Mix thoroughly. Remove and discard the vanilla bean. Pour the egg mixture into the caramel lined mold.

Place the mold in a larger pan of hot water and bake in a preheated 350˚ oven for about 1 ½ hours or until set (an inserted knife will come out clean). Cool completely before unmolding.

Makes 6-8 servings.

Margaret teaching at the Santa Barbara Botanic Gardens in January.

There a few spaces left at Margaret Best’s second class at the magnificent Santa Barbara Botanic Garden. Her first class last January class was filled with a waiting list and was very well received. So … she has been asked to come back.

The class is on Saturday 16th and Sunday 17th August at the Garden from 10 am – 4 pm. By request, Margaret is going to focus on ways to introduce higher level of realism into your work through understanding the form of the plant. She will also help you look at ways to improve overall composition. Although Margaret herself works in watercolor, she welcomes participants who wish to work in graphite or colour pencil. The class is open to all skill levels – come and enjoy the beauty of the Santa Barbara Botanic Garden with Margaret Best from Canada. See Margaret’s work on her web site, www.bestbotanical.com

Fee $125.00 for BAGSC and Santa Barbara Botanic Garden members, $145.00 for non-members.

If you would like to register for this workshop, you can do so online on the Santa Barbara Botanic Garden’s web site, or by calling (805) 682-4726, ext. 102.

It’s here! The ASBA 14th Annual Meeting and Conference Online Registration Web site is live and running. Click on the link to learn more about the exciting workshops, field trips, and special events planned for this year’s conference. This year we’ll all meet at the Huntington Library, Art Collections and Botanical Gardens in San Marino, CA, and at the Pasadena Hilton, from October 30 – November 1, 2008.

Visit the conference website often! We will be updating the Exhibitors’ Hall, instructors’ bios and images and will also be posting class materials lists on the website. Bookmark the site and keep up with what’s new.

We are also having pre- and post- conference classes, sponsored by BAGSC. Anne-Marie Evans will be teaching her five-day class right before the conference. It’s a great way to get started. After the conference, Alexander “Sasha” Viazmensky will teach a three-day mushroom class. Jenny Phillips and Pandora Sellars will each teach a five-day class. To sign up, contact Deborah Shaw. Additional information about each of the pre- and post-conference classes will be posted in the next few days.

Looking forward to seeing everyone in October!

Sally Jacobs, Apples

Sally Jacobs, posted by DB Shaw

Sally Jacobs, a member of BAGSC for many years and a former officer, is having a show of her new work at the TAG Gallery, February 27-March 22, 2008. The opening reception is Saturday, March 8, 5-8 pm. The address of TAG is 2903 Santa Monica Blvd (at Yale), in Santa Monica. 310-829-9556. She’d love to see you there.

She’ll also be giving an “Artist’s Talk” on March 19 at 7pm. The normal gallery hours are Wed-Sat, 11 am – 5 pm. Questions? Email Sally.

The March 1st Committee Meeting for the 2008 ASBA conference will be held at Deborah Shaw’s house at 10:00 am. All are welcome! Please call or email Deb to RSVP. Address and phone numbers can be found in the roster, and an email blast will be sent as well. See you there!

Kathy Dunham’s Matilija Poppies

Here’s Kathy Dunham applying some last minute touches to her painting of Matilija Poppies. Her painting was selected as the poster image for the Southwest Arts Festival held in January at the Polo Grounds in Indio, California. The festival is a show place for 260 artists from around the country. This was one of the few watercolors ever selected and fewer yet botanical pieces used for the poster.

It’s time to get your entries ready for the LA Garden Show!

This year we’re doing something different:  we’ll be a part of the LA Garden Show Marketplace and not at Peacock Corner (formerly known as The Oak Room).  In addition the show will be on view only for the days of the LA Garden Show (Thursday May 1, 2008 to Sunday May 4, 2008). As a result of the changes we will need less “Show Sitting” although the number of Show sitters may need to be increased as we may (we hope) see increased business.

Eligibility Requirements:
The show is open to all BAGSC members who wish to enter original work or prints of original work which have been created within the past two (2) years. As always, members also have the option of selling prints, notecards, etc. of their work. Participating members also need to give time at shifts at the show or participate in other show-related activity.

Subject matter:
Anything botanical, including realistic portrayals of flowers, plants, fruits and vegetables or studies in botanical art. The primary subject matter must be botanical, although insects or animals may be shown.

Media:
Watercolor, Graphite, Pen and Ink, Colored Pencil, etc.

Show Entry Deadline:  March 12, 2008

More details, including drop-off information and forms are available from our .pdf entry form or by mail. The .pdf entry form will be emailed to all members (and mailed to those members who do not have computer access) the week of February 18th. If you don’t receive a copy, or need another copy, please contact Janice Sharp, LA Garden Show Committee Chair.

The LA Arboretum is planning a bigger and better show than ever before. See you there!
