As part of BAGSC’s 20th Anniversary Celebration, we wished to start a scholarship fund to reach out to promising artists and foster their development as botanical artists. Congratulations to Irina Stolyarova, Natasha Zueva and botanical painting students from Russia! We warmly welcome Irina and Natasha as new members to our Botanical Artists Guild of Southern California (BAGSC) group.
Irina and Natasha were chosen by a committee headed by their teacher, Alexander Viazmensky (Sasha) to receive scholarships offered by BAGSC. Each scholarship includes a two-year membership to the American Society of Botanical Artists (ASBA) and BAGSC starting in 2018, plus a $100 gift.
Irina Stolyarova lives in St. Petersburg. She graduated from St. Petersburg State University of Culture and Arts as a librarian and bibliographer. She works as an economist/accountant. Irina has attended classes in botanical painting with Sasha since 2016.
She is also in her second year as an evening student in academic drawing classes at the Ilya Repin St. Petersburg State Academic Institute of Fine Arts, Sculpture and Architecture, and has participated in several botanical painting exhibitions since 2016. Natasha Zueva has a degree in Sociology and Art History. She has been a student of Sasha’s for about three years. She has exhibited her paintings in two shows that were held for Sasha’s students. (Note: please click any of the thumbnail images below to see a larger slide show.)

A warm welcome to BAGSC and ASBA!

In 2012, BAGSC member Estelle DeRidder was awarded an education grant from the American Society of Botanical Artists (ASBA) to use in creating reusable plant identification cards featuring California native plant illustrations from the Madrona Marsh Preserve in Torrence, California.
Information about Estelle’s project was presented at the ASBA Annual Meeting and Conference in Denver, Colorado during the ASBA Grant Presentations, October 17, 2014.
Estelle is now exhibiting the complete project at the Madrona Marsh Nature Center. Titled The Flashcard Project: Flora of the Madrona Marsh III, the exhibition runs from December 6, 2016 through January 20, 2017. There will be an opening reception Sunday, December 18, 2016
1:00 – 4:00 pm.
The public is invited and welcome.

The Huyck Preserve and Biological Research Station, in collaboration with the New York State Museum, is providing a unique opportunity for up to six natural history artists to immerse themselves in a two-week residency program in the picturesque Catskill hill-town village of Rensselaerville, New York. COM.EN.ART (Community. Environment. Art) is designed to provide concentrated field experience and study for illustrators, as well as encourage interaction and discussion about nature among artists, with scientists and with the community. This process affords the artist the opportunity to produce inspired and insightful natural history artwork.
Program Schedule:
Session I: June 20 – July 4
Session II: July 25 – August 8
Up to two applicants will be chosen for each session based on room availability
Application deadline: April 15, 2016

Artists and scientists have worked side by side for centuries, most notably in the realm of rendering the natural world. The COM.EN.ART Natural History Artist-in-Residency Program was inspired by that long-lived historic relationship and by a desire to provide artists with an opportunity to immerse themselves in nature, through the lens of science. The goal of this program is to provide a link to environmental stewardship, preservation and conservation through the aesthetics of art. The works completed under this residency contribute to the public understanding and appreciation of our natural landscape, as well as provide realistic representation of our many seasonal flora and fauna.
During their residencies, artists are free to produce artwork in their chosen manner and medium. The Preserve provides rustic housing, studio space, access to the laboratory, and over 2,000 acres of northeastern forest, fields, lakes and streams for exploration. In exchange, the artist is asked to contribute an original work constituting something appropriate for exhibition and publication, as well as a sketch page for our ongoing Artist’s Sketchbook.
This year, we are offer two traditional sessions as well as a new session focusing primarily on new art. Details about this new category will be available soon. Denver Botanic Gardens
The Denver Botanic Gardens has announced that applications are open for their 2016 artist in residency program. The Summer2016 residency provides an opportunity for the selected illustrator/artist to get involved in a variety of activities at the Denver Botanic Gardens, including open studios, demonstrations and educational projects in the classroom or the Science Pyramid, to online documentation and educational outreach. Last year’s artist in residence was Ikumi Kayama, who you might have met at the “Weird, Wild & Wonderful” Symposium at The Huntington last summer.
There are two residency opportunities, each for a period of six weeks:
June 13 – July 22 OR
August 8 – September 22

The closing date for submissions for the Denver Botanic Gardens artist in residency program is February 29, 2016. The selection process will be completed by March 4, 2016.

Artist-at-Sea Program
It’s not botanical art, but if you’re dreaming of getting away from it all, the Schmidt Ocean Institute is looking for artists of broad disciplines to work with scientists and the ship’s crew aboard the Falkor. In February, the Falkor will sail out of Tahiti to study the underexplored submarine vents off the Society Islands in the South Pacific Ocean.

As an extension of the ‘Flashcard Project’ which was started through a grant from the ASBA to illustrate the plants of the Madrona Marsh in Torrance, California, Estelle DeRidder has illustrated twelve more species, which are now on exhibit.
The exhibit is open to the public until December 3, 2015, with an opening reception on Sunday, November 15 from 1:00 – 3:00pm. Dessert and coffee will be served.
The Madrona Marsh is located at 3201 Plaza Del Amo, Torrance, California 90503, (310-782-3989) and is open Tuesday through Thursday 10:00am – 5:00pm.

The Denver Botanic Gardens’ School of Botanical Art has openings for three botanical artists/illustrators for their artist-in-residence program. Each residency is for one of the following six-week periods in 2015: April 20 – May 29; June 15 – July 24; August 10 – September 18. Accepted illustrators/artists are expected to spend five days per week on site at the Denver Botanic Gardens, although it can vary depending on agreement with the Gardens.
On-site resources include outdoor studio space, access to the Gardens’ library, herbaria, classroom and Science Pyramid. Residency contributions can include:
- online blog participation
- Open Studios and presentation of works-in-progress
- work produced during the residency
- educational workshops
- demonstrations to the public
The residency provides a stipend of $3,000. for each of the selected illustrator/artists to be used for housing and materials. One completed original work from each illustrator/artist will become property of Denver Botanic Gardens.
Applications are due by March 16, 2015. “One Truth, Many Lies: A New View of Art and Natural History Collections,” Artist Residency Program, California Academy of Sciences.
One Truth, Many Lies: A New View of Art & Natural History Collections [click on the title to view web page application information] is a new Artist Residency Program being offered to West Coast visual artists by The California Academy of Sciences in Golden Gate Park, San Francisco.
The deadline is coming up soon: proposals are due December 13, 2013, by email by 5:00 pm.
The Academy will select a total of four Artists for the program, to take place during the Spring/Summer of 2014. Artists will receive an honorarium and compensation for travel, lodging, meals and incidentals for three days and two nights in San Francisco, California.
Selected artists will be require to present two programs during their residency, at least one of which will be a public educational program consisting of a lecture or demonstration for the general public. A “hands-on” workshop or other class taught by the Artists in Residence will be offered free of charge to the public.
Artists will have at least one day to work with researchers at the Academy and with the collections housed in the Academy’s Institute for Biodiversity Science and Sustainability.
