Melbourne-based botanical artist and filmmaker David Reynolds has created a one-hour documentary about six of Australia’s botanical and natural history artists. Titled Studio Sessions: Seen through the eyes of the artist, the documentary features interviews with Celia Rosser, Jenny Phillips, Dianne Emery, Terry Napier, Mali Moir, and John Pastoriza-Piñol.
Written and directed by Reynolds, the documentary offers insight into the artists’ approach. Each interview is filmed in the artist’s studio, giving the viewer an intimate look at the setting in which the artists create their detailed, accurate works.

The DVD is available for pre-order through Reynolds’ website: http://www.davidreynoldsart.com.au/ Cost is $30 AUD (there is a convenient currency converter on the site) with an additional $10 AUD for postage and handling outside Australia. The DVD will be available world-wide in both PAL and NTSC format and will be Region Free. (Here in the US, NTSC is the most common format.)
Shipping is planned to begin in early September, 2016. Once the DVD is released, pre-order customers will be contacted to arrange payment and delivery. After release, the DVD will be able to be ordered through an online store on the website.

Jenny Phillips, internationally renowned botanical artist and teacher, is returning to Southern California to teach watercolor. Sponsored by the Virginia Robinson Gardens, Jenny will be teaching two workshops in two locations: one at the Virginia Robinson Gardens in Beverly Hills; the other at The Huntington Library, Art Collections and Botanical Gardens in San Marino. Participants may sign up for one or the other, or both.
Jenny runs the Jenny Phillips School for Botanical Art in Melbourne, Australia, and has taught in America, Europe and Africa. Jenny is known for her attention to detail and in her teaching, shares her expertise in helping everyone — from beginning to advanced students. She furthers understanding of the art of botanical painting by giving demonstrations of her methods, tips and the benefits of her experience. Her magic with a paintbrush, her techniques for correcting “mistakes” are well known and her enthusiasm is contagious. All who take her classes come away with a renewed energy and thrill of painting nature.

Just a reminder for those that have not signed up, that there are still a few spots available in Jenny Phillips class at the Virginia Robinson Gardens (VRG).
Jenny’s classes are always fun and rewarding and this time the three day class is drawing in preparation for the watercolor class the following week. So if possible, please take both segments as they are really one class. For those unable to take the drawing section, it will mean that you won’t be able (probably) to finish the painting in one week.
Jenny suggested roses as the subject but as most gardens have been pruned am not sure of availability so we may have a different subject and if so, one that can be included in the Florilegium. Or we may have a choice of subject.
For those that took Anne-Marie’s classes and painted wisteria and/or coral tree, we are hoping that while Jenny is here that they will be judged and the best two added to the Florilegium.
Please bring your finished paintings to VRG by April 8th. Please have them in a protective cover, unsigned if possible but clearly marked on the back of the painting with your name and phone number. Please remember that if your painting wins, you keep the copyright but you are giving the painting to Virginia Robinson Gardens and they will have the right to reproduce the painting for cards, prints, folio or anything else that flower paintings can used and that any monies from the sales of the reproductions belongs to VRG. The paintings will be aded to the permanent collection at the Gardens.

Fees for the three day session are $375 for VRG and BAGSC members; $450 for non-members. The five day session is $595 for VRG and BAGSC members; $650 for non-members. A deposit of $100 per class to hold the space can be accepted, but is non-refundable.

Virginia Robinson Gardens has announced two upcoming botanical art classes: Anne-Marie Evans and Jenny Phillips.

February marks the thirteenth annual botanical art class with the renowned Anne-Marie Evans. There will be two classes:
February 4 – 8, 2013 and
February 11 – 15, 2013
9:30 – 3:30 daily
The classes will be two separate weeks, but students may participate either week or in both weeks as the flower painted will be judged and the winnerʼs painting included in the Virginia Robinson Gardenʼs Florilegium.
Price per week is $595. for members and $675. for non-members. A deposit of $100.00
per week, which is non-refundable, may be made but as space is limited, the full amount must be received by February 1.

We are privileged to have two of the foremost artists and teachers in the world of Botanical Art scheduled to give classes at the Virginia Robinson Gardens shortly.
Jenny Phillips
JENNY PHILLIPS, from Australia, has her own botanical art school in Melbourne. She has not taught in America for five years so it is wonderful to have her back.
Class dates: April 11, 12 and 13, 2012
Time: 9:30 am – 4 pm each day.
Subject: Tonal work to emphasize form and planning a composition which will fill a page with movement and meaning.
Cost: $375.00
Jenny has also asked that each student bring a painting so that she can help with any problem areas that we need special help with.

ELAINE SEARLE, from England, will be returning for another of her popular classes. Elaineʼs quiet way of explaining “how to” has given us many “a ha” moments. Elaine is always ready to look at our paintings and help with problems.
Class dates: June 4 – 8, 2012.
