The Arboretum Library is a wonderful space for exhibiting art. [See the BAGSC News blog posting about the Arboretum Library here.] BAGSC members have been invited to participate in an art show in this newly renovated space. Entitled “Capturing the Arboretum: The Art of Botanical Illustration”, the subject matter is plants growing in the Arboretum. This is a juried show and art will be juried on its botanical accuracy and “art appeal”.
This exhibition will open July 16, 2016 and run until December 29, 2016. A reception will be held in the library on Saturday, July 16, 2016 1:00 pm to 3:00 pm.

BAGSC Call for entries for Edible Plants: Eat, Drink and Spice it up!
This BAGSC Exhibition at the San Diego Botanic Gardens will focus on all plants consumable. All life depends on plants, so let’s celebrate the diversity of plant life that is used in food, beverages and to enhance flavor. Draw or paint the weird fruit or vegetable found in the grocery store, the prize tomato from your backyard garden, an exotic spice or the essential ingredient of a beverage (such as hops!). If you can, include a recipe using your plant subject, or some information about how the plant is used.
All BAGSC members in good standing (dues paid) are eligible to submit up to three pieces of two-dimensional art work. High quality prints are acceptable, but no photos or digital enhancements please. Email images and entry forms to Lesley Randall. CDs of artwork can be mailed to Lesley’s home address along with the paperwork and entry fee. A full “Call for Entries” packet will be emailed soon to all BAGSC members.

Dates: Sept 23rd through November 18th 2016
Submission Deadline: August 12th 2016
Entry fee: $35.00. Payable to BAGSC.
Framing and Matting: ASBA standard – light to medium, simple wood frame. White to off-white matt with no colored liner.
Notification of acceptance: August 19 2016. Though not a juried show, if space becomes an issue, selections will be made to show a diversity of subjects and to include as many artists as possible.

Due to the cyber problems, the entry deadline for FON XIV will be extended until midnight on Thursday, March 17, 2016. The issues with the form are supposed to be resolved Thursday, but if anyone wishes to enter and has a problem with the form, please email Patricia Kernan directly to make sure your entry is recorded.

A new ASBA exhibition opportunity has materialized rather quickly: OA Gallery, a fine art gallery specializing in representational art is hosting an international exhibition of botanical art open exclusively to members of ASBA in June, 2016.

by Members of the American Society of Botanical Artists
They are offering a $1000 (US) prize for Best in Show and will be contributing 20 percent of sales to ASBA, as well as providing opportunities to promote ASBA and ASBA membership in conjunction with this event.
We are also excited that Dr. Peter Wyse Jackson, President of the Missouri Botanical Garden has agreed to be on the selection jury for this exhibition.

Entries are due soon: April 3, 2016. As this is a gallery exhibition, you may enter artwork that has been exhibited in prior exhibitions, including ASBA exhibitions.
OA Gallery is located in Kirkwood, MO, a charming suburb of St. Louis with neighborhoods of turn-of-the-century homes, a thriving business community, and an active interest in the arts and gardening. OA Gallery has joined ASBA as an institutional member and one of their partners, Steve Morris (whose work was recently accepted into Filoli’s next exhibition) is an individual member of ASBA.
We hope that this will be a step toward increasing awareness of botanical art in the St. Louis region, already a world renowned hotbed of activity in the plant sciences, horticulture and agriculture, and lay some groundwork for our ASBA conference in St. Louis in 2018.

Focus on Nature logo
The submission deadline to enter the Focus on Nature: Natural and Cultural History Illustration Exhibition is March 16, 2016. The exhibition’s goal is to include diverse subjects, ranging from botanical and natural history art to subjects in geology and human culture.
The jury will be facilitated by the New York State Museum, but the exhibition will take place at the Roger Tory Peterson Institute in Jamestown, New York, December 3, 2016 – April 9, 2017. Please visit the FON website for information and entry form.

In 2015, BAGSC had a wonderful opportunity to exhibit in Van de Kamp Hall at Descanso Gardens. The show, A Passion for Camellias, was shown in conjunction with the first Camellia flower show of the 2015 show season. The show was so successful, Descanso Gardens requested 11 art works from the initial display of 20 be re-hung in the historic and beautifully restored Boddy House, where they have remained on display.
BAGSC now has the opportunity to exhibit at Descanso as a feature of their May 14th and 15th, 2016 Rose Festival. Entitled “Everything’s Coming Up Roses”, the subject matter, is, of course, ROSES!

Are you looking for a tree to portray for the The Third New York Botanical Garden Triennial, “Out of the Woods”? We have a wonderful opportunity to participate in a guided tour of the unique tree collection of the Los Angeles County Arboretum and Botanic Garden, arranged just for pre-registered BAGSC members.
On the morning of Saturday, October 17, Jim Henrich, LA Arboretum Curator of Living Collections will take 20 pre-registered BAGSC members on a one hour, vigorous walk through the Arboretum to see and learn about some of their very special trees. Jim will explain what makes these trees stand out, their history and uses. After the tour you will be free to sketch and take pictures or just enjoy the Arboretum and Peacock café.
So that everyone can hear the discussion, this tour is limited to 20 members. To reserve a spot, email Clara Josephs. Confirmation and additional details will be sent to you by return email.

Focus on Nature XIV (FON XIV) has announced they will open in November, 2016 at the Roger Tory Peterson Institute (RTPI) in Jamestown, New York. It is an exciting collaboration between two institutions dedicated to continuing the tradition of natural history illustration. RTPI is a beautiful facility with exceptional exhibition space.
The entry deadline for FON XIV will be March 16, 2016. They will be posting the on-line entry form on the website (and I will hopefully receive an email alert as well, so I can post it to the BAGSC blog). Please check the FON website often as they are in the process of updating.
BAGSC and ASBA members have been well represented through the years in the FON exhibitions. Visit the FON website to view artwork from past exhibitions and award winners.

The Santa Barbara Zoo is advertising the opening reception and exhibition for the “Zoo in Bloom” exhibition. The show opening is October 3, 2015, from 10:00am – 5:00pm on Saturday, October 3, 2015, in the Volentine Family Gallery.
The Volentine Family Gallery is located inside the Discovery Pavilion. Zoo admission rates apply, and drinks and snacks will be available for purchase.

The Santa Barbara Zoo will be hosting an opening reception for the “Zoo in Bloom” exhibition, in conjunction with the gala celebrating Santa Barbara Zoo Members’ Day. The celebration runs from 9:00am – 5:00pm on Saturday, October 3, 2015.
BAGSC artists will be demonstrating throughout the day in the gardens and will staff an information table to answer any questions about our exhibit and about BAGSC and ASBA.
You do not need to be in the exhibition to volunteer — the more BAGSC members the merrier! Please let Lori Vreeke know when you would like to volunteer and what you would like to do.

While making plans for your Labor Day weekend, don’t forget that the submission deadline is September 5, 2015 for “Zoo in Bloom,” the juried BAGSC exhibition at the Santa Barbara Zoological Gardens. Jurors are: Olga Eysymontt, Ann Swan, and Chris Briggs.
All current BAGSC members in good standing are eligible to enter up to two (2) original works of art of botanical flowering specimens grown at the zoo (no prints). Artwork must depict plants that grow at the Zoo. There is no size limitation, and works may have been shown in previous BAGSC, ASBA, Filoli or other exhibitions.
The exhibition will continue through the end of the 2015 and will be open every day to visitors of the zoo. Due to space constraints, this will be a juried show with approximately 30 pieces of art hung. All original artwork must be for sale, prints not allowed.

The Santa Barbara zoo is home to over 600 animals on 30 acres of lush gardens overlooking the Pacific Ocean. The property was originally home to a private residence and was gifted to the city as a park. In 1963, the zoo opened to the public featuring formal gardens and lawns, native plants and trees, cacti and succulents, ornamentals and exotic species throughout the park to recreate natural habitat.

The 9th Annual California Islands Symposium is holding a juried show in conjunction with the National Park Service Centennial Celebration.

Artists are invited to enter original artwork in any two-dimensional medium that reflects the beauty and uniqueness of the California islands. All entries must depict the flora, fauna, or landscapes of the California islands. The show will be hung for the duration of the conference. A special showing at the Santa Barbara Botanic Garden will follow. Cash prize awards.
The California Islands Symposium and National Park Service believe that including the arts in the international symposium is a critical component in cultivating a greater appreciation of the unique California islands.

Eligibility
Open to all artists. Artists are invited to enter original artwork in any two-dimensional medium that reflects the beauty and uniqueness of the flora, fauna, and landscapes of the California Islands.
Digital Image Procedure
Entries may include up to three digital images. Artists will pay one entry fee for three images. All work must be .jpg file at least 300 dpi. It is crucial that all images be on the highest quality so our judges can fully appreciate and scrutinize your entry.
Entry Fees
$35 for each entry.
Jury Procedure
All artwork will be juried by digital image. Criteria for acceptance will include artistic presentation and technical use of medium, represented by a high-quality digital image. Artists whose work has been accepted will be notified by email by July 30, 2016. Winners will be selected by judges; final choices will be confirmed in person at the conference. The Conference Choice winner will be chosen by attendee votes at the conference.

Judges:
Bruce Everett, Professor Emeritus, California State University Northridge, is a renowned landscape painter with over 50 years of experience teaching at the college level as Professor of Painting, Drawing and Design. His work is represented in museum and corporate collections, public commissions, and has been shown in numerous solo and group exhibitions. Everett’s work appears in many publications including L.A.Rising: SoCal Artists Before 1980.
Hank Pitcher, painter of California culture and the coastal landscape, is a Senior Lecturer SOE of the College of Creative Studies at the University of California, Santa Barbara, where he has been part of the core faculty since 1971. A cross-disciplinarian active in conservation, Pitcher is a member of the Advisory Committee of the University of California Natural Reserve System, the Oak Group, and supporter of numerous local and national conservation organizations. He is represented by Sullivan Goss, An American Gallery, Santa Barbara.
Karen Kitchel is intrigued by concepts of native vs. invasive, and landscapes that contain stories of human exploration, occupation, and change. The resulting paintings combine meticulous craftsmanship with a conceptual point of view and aggressive, minimalist presentation.
Kitchel’s oil paintings have been featured in exhibitions throughout the U.S., and are in numerous private and public collections worldwide, including the Denver Art Museum, the Palm Springs Art Museum, and the U.S. State Department, among others.
Karen Kitchel was born in Battle Creek, Michigan and graduated from Kalamazoo College and Claremont Graduate University. She has exhibited professionally for over thirty years, and is represented by Robischon Gallery of Denver, CO, and Gerald Peters Gallery of Santa Fe, NM and New York, NY.
BAGSC News
