Join BAGSC and The Huntington Library, Art Collections, and Botanical Gardens for an innovative seminar, held in conjunction with The Huntington’s exhibition “Visual Voyages,” part of the Getty’s Pacific Standard Time: LA/LA initiative.

BAGSC and The Huntington are co-sponsoring this exciting weekend in November, and are experimenting with a new seminar format. Participants can register for one or more (or all) of the seminar components. BAGSC members have first options on spaces. Each of the seminar components are open to BAGSC Members, their guest(s), and the public. Wine and cheese reception: 4:00 pm – 5:00 pm
Join us for a private exhibition tour and discussion of “Visual Voyages” led by Lugene Bruno and Alice Tangerini: 5:00 pm – 7 pm. This seminar will be a discussion of the artwork of images of Latin American Nature in the exhibition and will compare and contrast the works to contemporary botanical art.

Round Table Discussion and Tour of “In Pursuit of Flora: 18th-Century: Botanical Drawings from The Huntington’s Art Collections.” Go from Latin America in the Boone Gallery Friday evening to British artists in the Huntington Art Gallery — Works on Paper room. “In Pursuit of Flora” pulls work from The Huntington’s collection to reveal 18th-century European appreciation for the beauty of the natural world. Lugene Bruno and Alice Tangerini will lead a tour of this exhibition and discussion of the artwork, as it compares to the “Visual Voyages” exhibition and contemporary botanical art.

A practical (and fun!) demonstration of pressing and preserving plants for future drawing and painting, and secret recipes for “restoring” preserved samples to use for drawing and painting. Learn how to press plants to preserve specimens for future drawing and painting, as well as how to “bring them back” to view for drawing and painting.

Workshop will break for lunch. Lunch will not be provided; please bring your own, or feel free to purchase lunch at one of The Huntington’s cafés. Please be advised that the cafés can be crowded on the weekends.

“Hidden Treasures: The rediscovery of art treasures in our collections” Public Lecture with Alice Tangerini, Smithsonian Institution and Lugene Bruno, Hunt Institute for Botanical Documentation, Carnegie Mellon: 3:00 pm – 4:00 pm in Rothenberg Hall.
Lugene Bruno and Alice Tangerini will present an illustrated lecture on missing artworks that were rediscovered in and curated for their museum collections. These art pieces represent historical events and important discoveries or were created for publications in the realm of science and art. They may have been stored in places where their presence was not easily detected; sometimes amongst old boxes of artifacts, in the files of herbarium specimens or even catalogued as another kind of object. Artists such as Frederick Walpole (1861–1904), Paulus Roetter (1806–1894), Isaac Sprague (1811–1895) and Mary Emily Eaton (1873–1961) portrayed each plant subject with aesthetic beauty and scientific accuracy. Walpole divided his time between Washington D.C. for the USDA and field trips to the Northwest as far as Alaska, during which time he made field drawings, watercolors and exquisite ink drawings that resemble fine line engravings. His talent was extinguished at 43 when he died of typhoid while working in California. Isaac Sprague, a self-taught artist, and one-time assistant to John James Audubon, was one of the most prolific illustrators of the 19th century and, from his home in Massachusetts, he drew in pencil and ink illustrations for published descriptions of native floras and plants collected during exploring expeditions and railroad surveys by some of the most important botanists of the period. Paulus Roetter, an émigré from Germany went on to create some of the finest drawings of the cactus family while accompanying the botanist George Engelmann on one of the government boundary surveys in the Southwest from 1853–1854. Engelmann named the cactus Cereus roetteri in honor of this artist’s skill. Mary Emily Eaton contributed drawings and watercolors for a four-volume opus, Britton’s The Cactaceae (1919–1923), while working as a scientific illustrator for the New York Botanical Garden. She lost her job during the depression and returned to England where she exhibited her work over the years. Each artwork has a storied past, and the history and the images of the artist’s field studies and finished drawings and paintings that were rediscovered in the collections will be featured in this presentation. By curating, cataloging and imaging these art works the Smithsonian Institution and the Hunt Institute preserve for the future a part of American history.

Lugene Bruno, Curator of Art & Senior Research Scholar at the Hunt Institute for Botanical Documentation, Carnegie Mellon University, Pittsburgh, PA. Since 1996, Lugene Bruno has held a position at the Hunt Institute for Botanical Documentation where she has immersed herself in the collection. She is responsible for all activities of the Art Department, including the curation of the art collection and twice-yearly exhibitions in the Institute’s gallery (most notably the triennial International Exhibition of Botanical Art & Illustration). She designs the exhibitions and companion catalogues; provides talks and tours related to collection items on site and at botanical conferences; responds to research requests; and makes available for study selections of the art collection to visiting scholars, students and artists. She is an honorary member of several botanical art and florilegia societies in the United States and abroad. Bruno is also a practicing artist working with the concepts of gestural abstraction and employing the mediums of photography and graphite drawing.

Alice Tangerini, Staff Illustrator and Curator of the Botanical Art Collection at the National Museum of Natural History, Smithsonian Institution in Washington, DC.  As a Staff Illustrator for the Botany Department at the National Museum of Natural History, Smithsonian Institution, Alice Tangerini has been specializing in drawing plants in pen and ink and graphite since 1972 and now her illustration media includes digital color.She has illustrated at least 1000 species of plants appearing in scientific periodicals, floras, and botanical and nature books. Most of her subjects are based on the Department’s extensive collection of over 4 million herbarium specimens.Alice also teaches classes in illustration techniques, presents lectures on botanical illustration and juries shows in botanical gardens and in academic institutions.She has exhibited her botanical artwork in numerous shows connected with the botanical and scientific illustration societies of which she is also a member. Her responsibilities in the department also include managing and curating an extensive collection of botanical illustrations, both historical and contemporary, which are available for viewing on the Department of Botany website.

The Guild of Natural Science Illustrators (GNSI) will be holding their 38th annual GNSI Conference at the University of California Santa Cruz, July 3-9, 2016.

Home to the infamous Banana Slug mascot, the three-day core conference will be held July 3-6, 2016 on the beautiful Santa Cruz campus. Conference housing will be provided at Cowell College. Most of the conference events will also be conveniently located at Cowell. Rooms will be available in Cowell residence halls or apartments on a first-come, first-serve basis. Each housing package includes a full meal plan in the dining hall and a parking permit.

During the core conference, there will be seven keynote addresses, 37 breakout sessions, an auction, the ever-popular and always inspiring portfolio sharing session and a techniques showcase where illustrators generously share their knowledge with conference attendees.

Plenary Speakers

Plenary speakers include John Muir Laws, nature journaling evangelist, who will present “Your Brain on Paper” and why it is so important for illustrators to have this observation tool. Terryl Whitlatch, artist for Star Wars Episode 1: The Phantom Menace, will share her tips and tricks in novel creature design. David Goodsell, a microbiologist from Scripps Institute of Oceanography, will reveal the world of cells in nanoscale through his watercolor paintings, which are both practical and beautiful.

Wendy Hiller Gee will highlight the importance of science and health literacy through her medical illustration practice. Breck Tyler, a seabird biologist, will share his experiences from 25 years at Midway Atoll observing albatross colonies. Jane Kim, founder of Ink Dwell studio, will share her extraordinary efforts to foster a love and respect for the earth through her Wall of Birds mural, depicting the 375-million-year evolution of birds. More than 260 species of birds are represented, all painted to scale. And Marc Paisin, our favorite art lawyer, will give us the rundown on how to copyright our own work (and how to stay out of trouble).

Presentations, Panels and Mini-Workshops

Following the plenary speakers in the mornings, there will be three afternoons packed with 50-minute presentations and 2-hour mini workshops by more than 45 experts in art, technical and scientific concepts. The presentations will cover a wide variety of topics, ranging from traditional media techniques (waxy pencil, gouache, and watercolor) to digital media (Photoshop and animation). BAGSC’s Tania Marien will be part of the panel for a presentation entitiled “When Good Careers Stall: Working Through the Slump.”

Collaborative Art Project

On Monday evening, all conference attendees can participate in illustrating a collaborative chalk mural of either a Kelp Forest or the California Coast Landscape. Expect a delightful evening of drawing, wine and desserts—working along side talented artists. Come prepared with sketches of your favorites from the species list on the website, or not; reference photos will be available. Want to help but not draw? Participants are needed to write species names in the border areas. After the conference, the two murals will hang on public display for about a month at the Sanctuary Exploration Center (SEC), a block from the Municipal Wharf—the heart of Santa Cruz.

Post-Conference Workshops and Field Trips

On July 7 and 8, following the core conference, there will be half-day and full-day workshops exploring traditional and digital media in depth. A few of the traditional media workshops include: silverpoint/pastels; mushrooms in watercolor; field sketching; graphite and pastel dust; and, textures in gouache.

A few of the exciting slate of field trips include: a whale-watching trip; sketching the jewel-like tide pools at Natural Bridges State Park; a behind-the-scenes tour of marine mammal facilities at Long Marine Lab; a day trip to Monterey Bay Aquarium and Cannery Row; and a kayaking trip in Elkhorn Slough. And, of course, what conference in Northern California would be complete without a wine-tasting tour.

Focus on Nature XIV (FON XIV) has announced they will open in November, 2016 at the Roger Tory Peterson Institute (RTPI) in Jamestown, New York. It is an exciting collaboration between two institutions dedicated to continuing the tradition of natural history illustration. RTPI is a beautiful facility with exceptional exhibition space.

The entry deadline for FON XIV will be March 16, 2016. They will be posting the on-line entry form on the website (and I will hopefully receive an email alert as well, so I can post it to the BAGSC blog). Please check the FON website often as they are in the process of updating.

BAGSC and ASBA members have been well represented through the years in the FON exhibitions. Visit the FON website to view artwork from past exhibitions and award winners.

Botanical illustration is an art with a long tradition. Although accuracy is the top priority, pen and ink botanical illustrations are art pieces of elegant beauty. Lesley will cover the basics from sketching to transfer and inking techniques. Types of papers and pens will also be discussed. All levels of experience are welcome! Students are encouraged to bring completed sketches so they can focus on inking techniques.

Lesley has been an illustrator for 27 years. Her published work has appeared in The Flora of Yosemite National Park, The Jepson Manual, Invasive Plants of California’s Wildlands and numerous scientific journals. She has exhibited her work in Australia, the United Kingdom, New York City and California.

The ASBA announced their annual awards last night at the closing banquet. Tania Marien was presented with the James White Service Award for her dedication to botanical art, in recognition of her distinguished support of botanical art.

Lesley Randall was presented with the ASBA Scientific Illustrator Award for Excellence in Scientific Botanical Art, in recognition of her outstanding achievements as a scientific illustrator.

George Olsen was presented with the ASBA Diane Bouchier Artist Award for Excellence in Botanical Art, in recognition of his outstanding acheivements as a botanical artist.

Unfortunately, the three award winners were not present to receive their awards in person. When Tania and Lesley’s names were announced, however, the BAGSC table cheered loud enought to hear back in Southern California. Congratulations to the award winners for richly deserved recognition!!

The San Diego Botanic Garden will be hosting a BAGSC exhibition of botanical art titled Artist’s Favorites. This juried show will feature botanical works near and dear to each artist’s heart. A work might be a favorite because of a particular plant specimen, because of a specific technique, or because it evokes a treasured memory of a place or time.

This exhibition is not only “artists’ choice” for artwork, but “artist’s choice” for framing too! If you would like to stick to the ASBA standards of a light wood, simple, L-shape frame, feel free to do so. If you have artwork framed in other styles, this is your chance to submit them in the frames you’ve chosen.

Some of the nitty gritty details:

All BAGSC members in good standing (dues paid) are eligible to enter up to 4 (four) pieces, which may consist of original, two-dimensional botanical art and illustration in any media, or archival giclée prints of original artwork. No photography or digital art. Work may have been shown in previous BAGSC, ASBA, Filoli or other exhibitions. THIS IS A JURIED SHOW. It is possible that multiple entries may not be accepted, depending on space availability and the number of submissions. Artwork or prints may be for sale if desired. The San Diego Botanic Garden will take a commission of ten percent of all sales.

A submission fee of $35.00 must be made out to BAGSC and sent with the submission form to BAGSC Treasurer and Exhibit Chair, Lesley Randall. Please write “Artist’s Favorite” on the subject line of your check. Your check must be received by Lesley Randall on or before August 15, 2014. If you would like to bring your submission check (and CD) to the BAGSC Pen and Ink class on August 9 and 10, 2014, OR to the July 20, 2014 BAGCS Quarterly meeting, please bring them then.

Files should be labeled with your name and artwork title. You can email your digital artwork with the entry form to Lesley Randall or mail it on a CD with a hard copy of the entry form. Your artwork, entry form and check must also be accompanied by a digital file with a written description of why each painting you’ve submitted is a “favorite.”

An email blast also will be sent out to BAGSC members with the submission form and additional information. Details about artwork delivery and pick-up will be sent out to all accepted artists at a later date.

Volunteering:
BAGSC members are needed to help set up and break down the exhibition.

Volunteers also are needed:

  • for hanging the exhibition;
  • at the opening reception to talk with guests and answer questions;
  • for signing in and signing out the artwork for the exhibition;
  • for breaking down the exhibition;
  • for collection and transport of artwork to and/or from SDBG;
  • and other show-related activities as needed.

BAGSC member Lesley Randal will be teaching a two-day workshop on Pen and Ink for Botanical Illustration at the San Diego Botanic Garden:

Pen and ink is an elegant art form and the traditional method used in botanical illustration. This class will cover the different techniques used to convey shading, the importance of using different line weights and choosing the appropriate paper.

The class will focus on the legume family with a short lecture of the diagnostic characters given by instructor Lesley Randall. Students are not required to draw a plant from this family, however. Students must provide their own plant specimen to draw, with flower, fruit or seed pod if possible. Students are encouraged to have some pencil sketches completed of their subject to bring to the class. This will allow maximum time for working in pen and ink. All levels of experience are welcome.

Coffee, tea and water will be provided, but please bring your lunch. A materials list will be provided upon registration. There is ample parking at the SDBG, but of course, we always encourage carpooling.

The class is presented by San Diego Botanic Garden and the Botanical Artists Guild of Southern California. Registration is on a first come, first served basis, maximum class size is 20 people. Lesley began her career in Davis California where she prepared illustrations for scientific publications. Her work has appeared in numerous journals as well as a few floras, including the Jepson Manual and An Illustrated Flora of Yosemite National Park. In recent years she has exhibited her work in international juried botanical art shows in the United States, Australia and the United Kingdom. While she works primarily in pen and ink, Lesley also enjoys working in color pencil and graphite. In addition to botanical art, Lesley makes leather masks and mosaics out of glass. She is currently employed at San Diego Botanic Garden as curator of plant collections where she finds many different plants to draw.

Alice Tangerini, botanical illustrator for the botany department at the Smithsonian National Museum of Natural History, will be exhibiting her work and giving two presentations at the Riverside Metropolitan Museum in Riverside, California as part of their “Smithsonian Week in Riverside.”

The free public programming is related to the “John Muir and the Personal Experience of Nature” exhibit at the Museum. In addition to a display of Alice’s work, the program includes:

If you haven’t had the pleasure of meeting Alice or taking a class from her, you’re in for a rare treat. Alice has illustrated more than 1500 species of plants for the Smithsonian and is also the curator of the 4800 plant drawings currently in the Smithsonian inventory. She is a board member of the American Society of Botanical Artists (ASBA), and is the person to whom we send our information and images to when we want to post them to the Member’s Gallery on the ASBA website. Alice received the American Society of Botanical Artists Award for Excellence in Scientific Illustration in 2008, teaches scientific illustration, and provides educational outreach. She is also a member of the Guild of Natural Science Illustrators (GNSI). You can view Alice’s scientific illustrations from the Catalog of Botanical Illustrations, Department of Botany, Smithsonian Institution online.

More information about the Smithsonian Week at the Riverside Metropolitan Museum is on their website. The museum is located at 3580 Mission Inn Avenue, near Orange Street, right off the 91 Freeway. The phone number is (951) 826-5273.

As long as you’re in Riverside, you might want to plan to arrive early and visit ArtPlantae. Just two blocks away you’ll find ArtPlantae at Aurea Vista Marketplace, at 3498 University Avenue on the corner of Lemon and University. Tania Marien will (of course!) be at the Riverside Metropolitan Museum to see Alice’s presentations, but her two areas in Aurea Vista will be open, and there are lots of other shops to see in Aurea Vista and in the mall in the historic downtown Riverside.

On Saturday, February 2, 2013, BAGSC participated in Roger’s Garden’s first “Day of Art” in Newport Beach. Fifty artists, using different media participated in a full day of drawing and painting demonstrations and workshops. The “Day of Art” was free to the public and for all ages.

Additionally, BAGSC had an interactive table where visitors could explore the botany (and some unusual) fruits and vegetables, and make stamp prints with them. BAGSC also had a botanical art information table, with a display of originals, prints and books of all kinds of botanical art, from scientific illustration to plant portraits, historical and current.

BAGSC artists participating included: Diane Daly, Clara Josephs, Arillyn Moran-Lawrence, Sue Kuuskmae, Alyse Ochniak, Tania Marien, Deborah Shaw, Pat Mark, and Janice Sharp.

Tania Marien and Deb Shaw gave a two-hour workshop in the afternoon in the outdoor amphitheater on drawing flowers and leaves in pencil, with drawing boards, drawing paper and pencils provided by Roger’s. A watercolor and pastel workshop was offered in the morning by plein aire artists David Damm and Gill Dillinger,  and a gourmet food truck, “Bite Me Foods” provided lunch for those who were hungry.

The event had been postponed from the previous Saturday due to rain. The weather held out this Saturday, and the event was packed with enthusiastic participants, even with the change in schedule. People and their dogs strolled the grounds, bought plants and took in the art.

Attendees were eager to watch the demonstrations, and BAGSC members spent the day talking about botanical art, different media and techniques to interested customers. Many inquired about botanical art classes and were complimentary about the day’s events. Roger’s reported overwhelmingly positive comments from their guests.

Thank you to all who participated, and to Roger’s for hosting the event. We hope there will be more in the future!

In October, 2012, when we posted the “Stipple, then Tipple” article about Anita Walsmit Sachs’ BAGSC class, we also posted a request for additional artwork as students completed their drawings. (See https://dbshaw.wordpress.com/wp-admin/post.php?post=1448&action=edit for the original article.)

January’s coming up fast, and the Chapman University Leatherby Library Drought Tolerant Plant Exhibition will be upon us (along with all the other exhibition opportunities we have stacked up for the month — but more on those later!).

Students from Jennifer Funk‘s Ecology course currently are writing descriptions of the plants’ drought-tolerant traits now. We are planning to have at least one species that fits into each of the following seven categories:

  • Drought-deciduousness (plants that lose their leaves during the dry season, or during periods of dryness)
  • Small leaves (better adapted to dry soils and conditions)
  • Deep taproot (a tap root that penetrates deep into the ground can access water when it is scarce during a drought or dry conditions, as well as store water in the root)
  • Succulent leaves (thick, fleshy leaves and stems can store water)
  • Pubescent leaves (pubescent, or furry leaves can slow the air flowing over the leaf to reduce water evaporation, hold water, reflect sunlight, and provide shade for the surface of the leaf)
  • Evergreen, sclerophylous leaves (evergreen leaves, of course, stay on the plant year-round; sclerophylous leaves have a hard surface and are frequently spaced close together
  • Annual life habit (one way to avoid dry periods is to quickly grow, bloom and develop seeds during the wet season, skipping the dry season altogether!)

Important Deadlines:

  • Artist entry deadline:  January 11 (BAGSC needs the list for handouts, Chapman University needs the list for labels and insurance)
  • Set up show in Henley reading room: January 25
  • Reception: February 7 , 7-9 pm
  • Take down the show: February 25

All BAGSC members will receive an email with the official BAGSC “Call for Entries” packet. If you do not receive this email with the attachment by 30 November, please contact Deb.

Sally's Studio

Sally’s beautiful studio space was all set up when we arrived, with handouts and gifts from Anita.

For three lovely days in mid-October twelve eager botanical artists enjoyed the warm personality and dazzling expertise of Anita Walsmit Sachs from the Netherlands. They met each morning in the pleasant downstairs classroom of Sally Jacobs’ Studio near LACMA to learn botanical line drawing from Anita, the head of the Art Department of the Nationaal Herbarium Nederland of the University of Leiden in the Netherlands.  She brought many examples of the beautifully composed line drawings she creates for scientific articles, complete with ink stippling to suggest shading and shape. She has also contributed exquisite watercolors of Acer and Syinga to the Florilegium of the Prince of Wales’ Estate at Highgrove, and has won two gold medals from the Royal Horticultural Society of England.

We brought our own plant to draw, first in pencil to show the “habit” or repeating part of the plant, then details of structure often viewed under a dissecting microscope and drawn over graph paper. These pencil drawings were cut out and taped into a suitable composition, which was perhaps the most challenging aspect of the project. This was then transferred via tracing paper and a light box to a paper with a vellum finish suitable for inking, which was done using Rotring or Staedler pens of several sizes to indicate the light source and overlapping. Finally graduated stippling with these pens to indicate shading and shape was discovered to be an excellent form of meditation!

Anita is an experienced Scientific Illustrator and teacher who is coming from the Netherlands to teach this very special class on October 12, 13, and 14. For a complete biography and an opportunity to see her work, visit her website.

Each student will select and bring to class a plant they wish to draw and get to know intimately.

The first day you will get to know the plant by study, making dissections, using a microscope and drawing.

The second day will be spent making a composition and deciding the technique you wish to work in.  This can be in pencil, watercolor or pen and ink which will make it  a scientific piece.

The last day we will try to finish our drawing or painting.

The teaching will be individual. Some experience would be nice.

The cost of this three day class on October 12, 13 and 14,  will be $300. The cost for non-members is $350. Space will be held upon receipt of a $50.00 non-refundable deposit. Final payment is due to Leslie by September 28. A list of materials and a suggested reading list will be sent by email, upon payment of deposit. The class will be held October 12, 13 & 14, from 9:30 to 3:30 each day at Sally Jacobs’ Studio.
