Nepenthes! The very epitome of Weird, Wild, and Wonderful was the subject of a three-day pre-symposium workshop led by Mieko Ishikawa, a featured artist in the Weird, Wild & Wonderful exhibit currently on view at the Brody Botanical Center at The Huntington and also a Keynote Speaker at our symposium.

Mieko Ishikawa graciously traveled across the Pacific to join us here in Southern California. Her first event of the Symposium was her three-day workshop on Nepenthes. The Huntington botanical gardens staff kindly cultivated and provided living Nepenthes plants for the workshop, and Mieko provided Reindeer Vellum for her students’ paintings.

First Mieko treated us to a wonderful presentation about her adventures finding and painting the very special plants of Borneo. We then enjoyed a behind-the-scenes tour of The Huntington greenhouse where the Nepenthes were grown. Robert Hori of The Huntington and BAGSC’s very talented Akiko Enokido provided interpretive skills for the workshop.

After three days of intense study, graphite drawing on our vellum, and very careful application of watercolor on our drawings with extremely tiny brushes, we all had a much greater understanding of the stunning talent and achievements of Mieko Ishikawa. Her mastery of the structure of the plants, as well as her breathtaking artistic talent, gave all of us an enormous dose of inspiration to continue learning and painting!

Many, many thanks to everyone who made the workshop possible – including The Huntington gardens’ staff, the ASBA, the amazing BAGSC women who organized the symposium, and especially our tireless and patient instructor, Mieko Ishikawa.

An enthusiastic group of artists enjoyed three days with Elaine Searle for her class entitled “Liquid Shine…Sculpting Form with Light and Color”. This was one of two Weird, Wild & Wonderful pre-symposium classes held at The Huntington this week. Gilly Shaeffer searched everywhere until finally her artist’s eye found beautiful Italian peppers for our studies. The class explored the differences between Sheen, Shine and Liquid Shine learning a host of indispensable techniques and tips.

Gilly Shaeffer, long time member of BAGSC, will be holding four Thursday morning classes in July at her home studio entitled “Drawing Basics.” This is a great opportunity for beginners and intermediates to perfect their drawing skills and also a preparation for doing botanical watercolor painting. It is perfect for those who like a small group experience with a lot of individualized attention. It will consist of a cumulative series of exercises to improve observational and drawing skills, as well as, preparing students to create three dimensional form through light to dark shading. Those who complete the drawing exercises with Gilly will move on to the study of botanical watercolor painting. The understanding and skills gained through these classes can be applied when doing all types of drawing and painting.

In January of 2015 BAGSC staged a show entitled A Passion for Camellias in Van de Kamp Hall at Descanso Gardens. The exhibit was an exciting addition to the first Camellia flower show of the 2015 show season. BAGSC members were on hand all that weekend to answer questions and to provide demonstrations.

At the request of Descanso Gardens, 11 art works from the initial display of 20 have been re-hung in the historic and beautifully restored Boddy House where they are expected to remain well into 2016. Art works were selected to represent as many contributing artists as possible. The area where the botanicals are hanging invites close observation, along the interior hallway leading to and spilling into the kitchen.

BAGSC members Margaret Best and Melanie Campbell-Carter have been accepted into the 18th Annual International American Society of Botanical Artists at The Horticultural Society of New York.

Margaret’s 8.5 x 11 watercolour on paper is of a Canadian native Echinacea. She writes, “There are two Echinacea natives species in Canada. The one shown is Echinacea purpurea or purple cone flower—the species widely harvested for medicinal use. It has also become popular as a cultivated flower in Canadian gardens, as it brings a final splash of colour at the end of summer and into the fall. The specimens I used came from my daughter’s beautiful front garden that she inherited from the previous green-fingered owner of their new home in Ontario, Canada.”

Melanie submitted a Pseudobombax ellipticum, also known as the shaving brush tree. She writes, “The tree was in its full blooming glory this past March on the island of Kauai. Depicting the sturdy strength of its stems and buds, and the delicate profusion of vivid pink stamens, was not only an enormous challenge but also a fantastic and joyful process. As we spent our days and weeks together, I developed a great affection for my ‘shaving brush.’  I am so thrilled to have been able to translate a gorgeous, living thing to paper in such a way that it continues to speak to others!”

A Little About the International ASBA/Hort Exibition

Each fall, the Annual International American Society of Botanical Artists at The Horticultural Society of New York exhibition is held at the Hort in mid-town Manhattan. It is the ASBA’s longest running collaboration. Past exhibitions are posted on the ASBA’s website; this year’s exhibition will be posted as well.

The Hort’s Gallery encourages gardeners and artists alike to appreciate the creative intersection between art and nature. Exhibitions showcase emerging and established contemporary artists inspired by horticulture, botany, landscape, and the environment.

BAGSC will be holding an adjunct exhibition to “Weird, Wild & Wonderful: The New York Botanical Garden Second Triennial Exhibition, Botanical Illustrations of Remarkable Plants” in Banta Hall at The Huntington’s Brody Botanical Center.

The theme of this exhibition will focus on botanical specimens of plants compatible with the theme of the New York exhibition, “Weird, Wild & Wonderful.” Curated by the ASBA and originally opening in New York in 2014, “Weird, Wild & Wonderful” will open June 13 and continue through August 23 in The Huntington’s Brody Botanical Center, Flori-Legium Room, San Marino, California. The exhibition will be open to the public Saturdays and Sundays during the summer, plus additional times during workshops and the Symposium. The exhibition also will be open to the public August 1 – 9 along with the BAGSC “Weird, Wild & Wonderful” adjunct exhibition.

BAGSC artists are invited to seek visually unusual plants and create works of art that celebrate the bizarre, yet beautiful flora of the world. Botanical oddities and curiosities could be those found locally, in natural surroundings or a botanical garden. Dick Rauh, PhD offered ideas to artists on potentially pertinent plants: http://asba-art.org/article/weird-wild-and-wonderful-suggested-subjects.

The “Call for Entries” packet will be sent out via email blast to members soon. Members will be able to enter up to three works. It is our hope to include at least one art work from each and every BAGSC member. Framing will be “artists’ choice.”

  • ASAP: We will be coordinating with BAGSC artists and The Huntington to include as many different species as possible. Please let us know what you have, are painting, or are considering painting. Please email the complete botanical name of your choices ASAP to Beth Stone. Don’t worry, this does not obligate you to submit those works.
  • Wednesday, May 27, 2015: This date is the absolute deadline for getting your list emailed to Beth Stone of what you have, are painting, or are considering painting. We will submit our “list of plant subjects” as best we know it to The Huntington so they can start planning on signage, related plants from the Garden, microscopes and more to go with our exhibition.
  • Wednesday, July 1, 2015: July 1 is the deadline for digital submissions, entry fee and complete entry forms.

Need some Weird, Wild & Wonderful inspiration?

Kathy Musial, The Huntington’s curator of living collections, and Huntington horticultural staff will give BAGSC members a private tour of the greenhouses and gardens to talk about their own favorite weird, wild and wonderful plants. This is a great opportunity to get ideas and ask a botanist questions about plants you are painting.

10 am; The tour begins at 10 am sharp, so please plan to arrive earlier so you are ready. The tour will leave whether or not you are there.

The Denver Botanic Gardens’ School of Botanical Art has openings for three botanical artists/illustrators for their artist-in-residence program. Each residency is for one of the following six-week periods in 2015: April 20 – May 29; June 15 – July 24; August 10 – September 18. Accepted illustrators/artists are expected to spend five days per week on site at the Denver Botanic Gardens, although it can vary depending on agreement with the Gardens.

On-site resources include outdoor studio space, access to the Gardens’ library, herbaria, classroom and Science Pyramid. Residency contributions can include:

  • online blog participation
  • Open Studios and presentation of works-in-progress
  • work produced during the residency
  • educational workshops
  • demonstrations to the public

The residency provides a stipend of $3,000. for each of the selected illustrator/artists to be used for housing and materials. One completed original work from each illustrator/artist will become property of Denver Botanic Gardens.

Applications are due by March 16, 2015. Anita Walsmit Sachs will be offering a 5-day botanical drawing and painting workshop, “Hortus atelier” in cooperation with The Hortus botanicus, Leiden, in 2015.

About the Hortus

The Hortus botanicus Leiden is a green oasis in the center of Leiden.

The Hortus botanicus Leiden is the oldest botanical garden in the Netherlands and one of the oldest in the world. It is located in the historical centre of Leiden. Sitting behind the academy building of the Leiden University, the garden is a green oasis with a large collection of plants native to Southeast and East Asia, Southern Europe and South Africa. The Hortus is a haven within the city centre, a historical monument and a meeting place full of character.

People go to the Hortus to relax, enjoy the seasons or to learn more about the diversity of the plant kingdom.

In 1590 the Hortus was founded by the University of Leiden. In 1594 Carolus Clusius (1526-1609) turned it into a medicinal herb garden. But Clusius introduced the tulip and many other plants like tobacco and potato to the Hortus. These flowers and plants became known throughout Western Europe.

The Hortus botanicus Leiden is the oldest botanical garden in the Netherlands, and one of the oldest in the world.

Many famous international scientists such as Clusius, Boerhaave, Linnaeus and Einstein were connected to the Hortus  botanicus in Leiden.

In the 19th century, the German physician Philipp Franz von Siebold (1796-1866) brought hundreds of plant species with him from Japan to the Netherlands and 15 of these original introductions can still be found in the Hortus today.

The Hortus atelier program

The purpose of a botanical illustration is primarily a scientifically accurate drawing. The artistic input is reflected in the sensitivity in which the subject is displayed and in the composition.

PROGRAM: from April 12 to April 16, 2015
First day, the class starts at 10, with coffee and presentation, who is who and info, followed by a guided walk through the garden.
Lunch 12.00 – 12.30
Afternoon 12.30 – 15.45 Instruction about the subject to draw. Pencil drawing, including light and dark values.

Second day, instruction about material, paper, paint and colour mixing and composition.

Third day, transferring the drawing to the watercolour paper and painting.

Fourth and fifth days, continuing the process. Every day there will be a discussion about the progress of the drawing. The  education is individually focused to gain an optimal result.

The fee will be € 375,00 including morning coffee, brasserie lunch and afternoon drinks. Information about payment will follow after subscription as well as information about lodging possibilities. Anita initially trained in fashion design at the Royal Academy of fine Arts in The Hague. Fifteen years ago she became a scientific illustator at the National Herbarium of Leiden University, now Museum Naturalis. She has won two RHS Gold medals and a second prize medal at the RBG show in Sydney, Australia. Anita has participated in the Highgrove Florilegium of HRH Prince Charles. She is passionate about painting and teaching.

Cristina Baltayian will be teaching “Botanical Art & Illustration” at the Los Angeles Arboretum, four Tuesdays in November:

Explore colored pencil, graphite, pen and ink, and watercolor on various papers, vellum and other surfaces. Class emphasis will include: plant observation, drawing, composition, color theory and matching, and medium techniques. All levels are welcome. Participants will enjoy personalized attention.

In conjunction with a project by BAGSC members, students may focus on portrayal of many of the last 50 years of LA Arboretum plant introductions in order to build a collection of paintings that will celebrate and document the invaluable contribution of the Los Angeles Arboretum to the state of California.

Fall gourds, covered with bumps, ridges, nooks and crannies, are wonderful subjects for exploring how to create the illusion of three-dimensions on a flat piece of paper. Learn how lighting, shadows, highlights and reflected light create three-dimensional form.  This two-part workshop will use graphite, graphite powder, charcoal, charcoal powder and instant coffee as drawing and painting media.

About the instructor:
Deborah Shaw has a degree in fine art from Pomona College, The Claremont Colleges, where she also studied botany and native California flora. Ms. Shaw is an active member of the American Society of Botanical Artists, the Botanical Artists Guild of Southern California, and the Guild of Natural Science Illustrators, and has taught art and botanical art at numerous venues, including The Getty, The Huntington, Virginia Robinson Gardens and Bowers Museum.

Deborah’s work has been displayed in juried and non-juried exhibitions, and is in private collections. Her work also is in the permanent collection at the Hunt Institute for Botanical Documentation at Carnegie Mellon University. She has received numerous awards for art, illustration, design, product design and advertising. Her preferred media include graphite, watercolor, colored pencil, scratchboard, Illustrator and Photoshop.

In 2012, BAGSC member Estelle DeRidder was awarded an education grant from the American Society of Botanical Artists (ASBA) to assist with creating sets of reusable plant identification cards featuring native plant illustrations from the Madrona Marsh Preserve in Torrence, California.

The Madrona Marsh Preserve, in collaboration with the ASBA has announced the opening of an exhibition of Estelle’s completed artwork, “The Flora of the Madrona Marsh” on Sunday, December 7, 2014, from 2 pm to 5 pm.

The exhibition will run from November 19, 2014 – January 9, 2015. Estelle also will make two presentations at the Madrona Marsh Preserve, one on Saturday, December 6, 2014 and another on Sunday, December 14, 2014, discussing botanical illustration and its importance in our world.

Information about Estelle’s project will be presented at the ASBA Annual Meeting and Conference in Denver, Colorado during the ASBA Grant Presentations on Friday evening, October 17, 2014 from 4:30 pm to 6:30 pm.

The exhibition will then travel to the La Crescenta Public Library in La Crescenta, California from January 24 – February 28, 2015.

If you haven’t registered for the 2014 ASBA Annual Conference in Denver, Colorado yet, there’s still time. The last day of registration is September 12, 2014. After the 12th, registration will be closed, and no registrations will be accepted.

The Rocky Mountain Society of Botanical Artists is hosting the ASBA’s 20th Annual Meeting and Conference this year. The Conference will be held at the Westin Denver Downtown. Book your room directly with the Westin (information is on the “Lodging” page). If you would like a roommate, email Marilyn Garber.

The Westin is located one block from the famous 16th Street Mall, and within walking distance of the Denver Art Museum, the American Museum of Western Art – The Anschutz Collection, the Clyfford Still Museum, the Museum of Contemporary Art Denver, the Molly Brown House Museum, Denver Public Library’s Western History and Genealogy Department, the historic Brown Palace Hotel and shopping destination Larimer Square.

In addition to the three-day core conference, there are pre- and post-conference workshops.  Conference activities will be held at the Westin Hotel and the Denver Botanic Garden.

The ASBA Silent Auction
If you would like to support the ASBA’s “Artist & Education Grants,” publication of The Botanical Artist journal, and ASBA exhibitions, consider donating to the Silent Auction/Market Place to be held the last night of the conference. Money raised during the Silent Auction directly supports these efforts.

The volunteers for the Silent Auction are always on the lookout for unique items with some sort of botanical theme. You can find donation ideas listed in the Request for Donations in the June issue of The Botanical Artist journal. Bidding starts at 50 percent of the value of the item in
the Silent Auction. This year the ASBA is adding a Market Place component for less expensive items. No bidding is required in the Market Place. You want it? Just simply purchase it.

Donation information is required by September 27. Shipped items must be received by October 13. If you’re going to the conference, you may bring your Silent Auction/Market Place items with you.

Some more important information
Denver’s altitude is 5,280 feet, one mile above sea level. While in Denver, drinking plenty of water is the number one way to adjust to the higher altitude. October temperatures average 37 to 65 degrees F.

The California Native Plant Society (CNPS) has announced registration is now open for the 2015 Conservation Conference. Held every three years, this conference coincides with the 50th anniversary of CNPS. The conference will be held from January 15 – 17, 2015 at the Double Tree by Hilton, in San Jose, California. Those registering by October 31, 2014 will enjoy early registration savings on the conference, workshops, and field trips.

Call for Entries

The last CNPS Conference was held in San Diego, California in 2012. BAGSC artists were well represented in the exhibition at that conference, and Deborah Shaw, Joan Keesey and Estelle DeRidder won second place, third place and an honorable mention. The CNPS will host a juried Botanical Art Exhibition in association with the 2015 conference and has issued a call for entries to the exhibition. One of the goals of the botanical art exhibition is to encourage a greater understanding and appreciation of California’s unique flora.

Artists are invited to enter original artwork of California flora in any two-dimensional medium that is botanically accurate and reflects the beauty and uniqueness of California’s native flora.

Prizes will be awarded, and all winning artwork will be published in Fremontia, a CNPS publication. The first place prize is $500; second place is $300; third place is $200. A “Conference Choice” prize will also be awarded, based on votes by conference attendees.

Botanical Art Exhibition Details

The deadline for submission is November 1, 2014. Submitting artists must complete this entry form: cnps2015_art-entry. [The Botanical Art Exhibition entry form is also available for download on the conference website: http://www.cnps.org/cnps/conservation/conference/2015/art.php%5D The maximum framed size for each piece is 20″ x 24″; the minimum framed size is 9″ x 12″. Work outside these limits will not be accepted.

Each artist may include up to three (3) digital jpg images for submission, at least 300 dpi, emailed as attachments for a $35.00 entry fee. Artists who are registered to attend the conference may pay $25.00 for up to three entries.

All artwork must be of California native plants. Digital image submissions should be of the highest quality so that judges will be able to fully appreciate the details of the artwork. Each digital file name should include the artist’s name and the title of the entry. Digital image jpgs should be emailed to Josie Crawford, CNPS Education Program.

Artists will be notified by November 30, 2014 as to whether their work has been selected. The show will be hung for the duration of the conference and security will be provided. The public will be able to view the exhibition on Saturday, January 17, 2015. Prize winners will be posted on Saturday, January 17 as well.

Sale of Prints and Note Cards

CNPS will invite artists whose work has been accepted to submit prints and packets of note cards to be sold at the conference store. Artists interested in sales should complete the Prints and Note Card section of the entry form. CNPS will handle all sales; 30 percent of sales will be donated to CNPS. Space in the retail area may be limited, and it may not be possible to accept sales items from all accepted artists. Judges

The CNPS Botanical Art Exhibition will have three judges:

Kristin Jakob, Botanical Illustrator
Kristin has dedicated much of her life to the study, cultivation, and depiction of plants — in particular, her beloved California native species. Born and raised in Mill Valley, Marin County, she began drawing plants at the age of 12, when she joined CNPS. Essentially self-taught, Kristin has also studied in England, where in 1981 she received an M.A. from the Royal College of Art in London. Since returning to California, her botanical art has graced a wide array of books and periodicals, package designs, posters, prints and cards, and numerous groups and solo exhibitions. Commissions include two major projects for CNPS: the poster “Wildflowers of the Sierra Nevada,” and the set of four grass poster/placemats.

Lee McCaffree, Botanical Illustrator
Lee McCaffree teaches botanical illustration classes and workshops and helped develop the Botanical Art Certificate Program at Filoli Gardens in Woodside, California. She received medals for her “Pinus” series and “Plants in Peril” series at the Royal Horticultural Society exhibitions in London. She serves on the Board of the American Society of Botanical Artists, and worked with the plant sale propagation team for EBCNPS. Lee’s publications include the posters for the EBCNPS Plant Sale, and illustrations in “Today’s Botanical Artists” and “Curtis’s Botanical Magazine”, Kew Gardens, England.

Geri Hulse-Stevens, Botanical Illustrator and Botanist
Geri Hulse-Steens graduated from the University of California, Santa Barbara with a minor in art and entered into the world of scientific illustration through classes taught by Chuck Stasek at the Point Reyes Field Seminars. Her work was first publishe in “Fremontia” in 1982 in an article she wrote and illustrated. Her illustrations have appeared in books, government publications and articles since. She is a botanical consultant living in Mendocino County and has played an active role in the Sanhedrin Chapter of CNPS for more than 25 years.

The San Diego Botanic Garden will be hosting a BAGSC exhibition of botanical art titled Artist’s Favorites. This juried show will feature botanical works near and dear to each artist’s heart. A work might be a favorite because of a particular plant specimen, because of a specific technique, or because it evokes a treasured memory of a place or time.

This exhibition is not only “artists’ choice” for artwork, but “artist’s choice” for framing too! If you would like to stick to the ASBA standards of a light wood, simple, L-shape frame, feel free to do so. If you have artwork framed in other styles, this is your chance to submit them in the frames you’ve chosen.

Some of the nitty gritty details:

All BAGSC members in good standing (dues paid) are eligible to enter up to 4 (four) pieces, which may consist of original, two-dimensional botanical art and illustration in any media, or archival giclée prints of original artwork. No photography or digital art. Work may have been shown in previous BAGSC, ASBA, Filoli or other exhibitions. THIS IS A JURIED SHOW. It is possible that multiple entries may not be accepted, depending on space availability and the number of submissions. Artwork or prints may be for sale if desired. The San Diego Botanic Garden will take a commission of ten percent of all sales.

A submission fee of $35.00 must be made out to BAGSC and sent with the submission form to BAGSC Treasurer and Exhibit Chair, Lesley Randall. Please write “Artist’s Favorite” on the subject line of your check. Your check must be received by Lesley Randall on or before August 15, 2014. If you would like to bring your submission check (and CD) to the BAGSC Pen and Ink class on August 9 and 10, 2014, OR to the July 20, 2014 BAGCS Quarterly meeting, please bring them then.

Files should be labeled with your name and artwork title. You can email your digital artwork with the entry form to Lesley Randall or mail it on a CD with a hard copy of the entry form. Your artwork, entry form and check must also be accompanied by a digital file with a written description of why each painting you’ve submitted is a “favorite.”

An email blast also will be sent out to BAGSC members with the submission form and additional information. Details about artwork delivery and pick-up will be sent out to all accepted artists at a later date.

Volunteering:
BAGSC members are needed to help set up and break down the exhibition.

Volunteers also are needed:

  • for hanging the exhibition;
  • at the opening reception to talk with guests and answer questions;
  • for signing in and signing out the artwork for the exhibition;
  • for breaking down the exhibition;
  • for collection and transport of artwork to and/or from SDBG;
  • and other show-related activities as needed.
