for a day of mini-workshops and fun exploring techniques and supplies.

This day of botanical art is designed to allow participants of all levels an opportunity to enjoy a hands-on botanical art experience in different mediums. The day starts with a presentation about botanical art. Then, each participant can choose any combination of four (4) one-hour, hands-on workshops taught by skilled BAGSC instructors. Registration is for the entire day—no pre-registration for individual workshops is required.

Participants may choose to sit down with different artists to experience techniques applied to creating botanical art. Currently scheduled are:

  • Creating 3D forms by light to dark shading in graphite
  • How to do a watercolor wash
  • Easy color mixing in watercolor (NEW—just added!)
  • Dry brush techniques (NEW—just added!)
  • Using pen and ink in scientific illustration
  • Drawing with silverpoint
  • Color pencil techniques in botanical art
  • Labeling your painting with calligraphy
  • Creating 3D forms by light to dark in watercolor
  • How to draw a leaf in graphite
  • Using mixed media in scientific illustration
  • Graphite tips and tricks
  • Perspective for plants
  • Watercolor pencil techniques

Cristina Baltayian’s art and illustration class at the Los Angeles County Arboretum & Botanic Garden is holding their third annual ARTboretum Botanical Art Show and Sale:

Saturday, January 5, 2019 through Thursday, February 14th, 2019 in the Arboretum Library.

The Open House and Reception will be held on Saturday, January 12th, 2019, from 2:00 pm – 4:00pm.
The Arboretum Membership Celebration is on Saturday, January 26th, 2019.

The exhibit is free with Arboretum admission.

Cristina Baltayian’s botanical art workshops at the Los Angeles Arboretum & Botanic Garden begin again  October 2, 2018. These classes will explore colored pencils, watercolors, watercolor pencils, graphite, and some of us are exploring gouache, colored backgrounds, and more.

Regular classes will meet on Tuesdays. Registration is available on a monthly basis. Additional month-long sessions will meet in November and December, although there will be only three classes in December due to the holidays.

The beauty of capturing nature in a realistic style using watercolor and color pencil will be on display at the Los Angeles Arboretum and Botanical Garden on
Friday, Saturday and Sunday,
April 29, 30 and May 1, 2016,
11:00 a.m. to 5:00 p.m

Electronic Pomegranate Postcard“I have been honored to teach the botanical illustration class for the last four years,” said instructor Cristina Baltayian. “The best way to highlight the value of the Arboretum and its botanical art educational program is to allow you to see the inspiration, talents, and visions of the students.”

Twelve artists will display original art and fine art giclees in the Oak Room for this weekend event. In addition, prints and greeting cards will also be available for sale. Artists will demonstrate techniques and will be available to answer questions. The public is invited to attend the Artists’ Reception and Catalog Signing on Saturday, April 30 from 1:00 to 3:00 p.m. Catalogs for the show will be available for sale while supplies last.

Admission to the art show and sale is free with admission to the Arboretum.

Cristina Baltayian will be resuming her popular series of Botanical Art and Illustration classes at the LA County Arboretum and Botanic Gardens on January 5, 2016.

The classes are held on the first four Tuesdays of each month, 10 am – 2 pm, in the Oak Room. Cristina’s first six-week unit will be Aerial (atmospheric) Perspective. Create “flat-free” paintings! Students will explore depth of composition, showing distinct foreground, middle ground, and background with a variety of techniques.

Enrollment is open to the public through the Education Department at the Arboretum, 301 N Baldwin Ave, Arcadia CA 91007. Tuition is discounted for Arboretum members. Call the Arboretum at 626-821-3222 or email Cristina for more information.

If you love plants and like to draw, this workshop on botanical drawing is custom-made for you! Join instructor Cristina Baltayian for a three day workshop on drawing autumn leaves in colored pencil on wood.

Drawing is a fundamental skill in botanical art and its importance should never be underestimated. In these three days, you will:

  • Hone your observation skills
  • Be guided through sketching and line drawing exercises
  • Discover how to arrange shapes on a page and make a pleasing composition
  • Translate a 3-dimensional subject onto a 2-dimensional surface

This exploration in colored pencil on wood will show you how to start and finish a botanical portrait of a leaf. If your curiosity is piqued and you wish to investigate further, please join the on-going Tuesday Botanical Art classes from 10am-2pm.

Cristina Baltayian holds a Botanical Illustration Certificate from Cornell University. She has a background in drawing (graphite, charcoal, pen and ink), two-dimensional design, watercolor, and colored pencils. Her work is in public and private venues, and has been shown at Filoli, Los Angeles County Arboretum and Botanic Garden, Chapman University, Virginia Robinson Garden and in an adjunct Botanical Artists Guild of Southern California group exhibition presented by the botanical gardens at The Huntington Library, Art Collections and Gardens. She is a member of the American Society of Botanical Artists, and The Botanical Artists Guild of Southern California.

Cristina Baltyian will be showing work in "Works on Paper," at SAGA Fine Art.

Cristina Baltayian will be exhibiting her artwork in “Works on Paper,” at SAGA Fine Art.

Cristina Baltayian will be showing 15 paintings at SAGA Fine Art in an exhibition entitled Works on Paper. Showcasing artwork in watercolor, pastel and pencil, the exhibition runs from February 17 – March 27, 2015. An opening reception will be held Saturday, February 28, 2015 from 5 – 7 pm.

SAGA Fine Art specializes in representational Plein Air, Landscape, Figurative and Still Life paintings by contemporary artists. It is located at 110 West Lime Avenue, Monrovia, California 91016, 626.358.5563. Gallery hours are Tuesdays through Saturdays, 1 – 6 pm.

Our dear Jill Berry at the Los Angeles Arboretum will be retiring shortly. BAGSC sends out a BIG THANK YOU to Jill for all your years of help, service, and support.

Many of us got our start in botanical art at the LA Arboretum, in classes taught by Olga Eysymontt. Jill was a big part of our experience there, and we will miss her. Jill, congratulations on your retirement, and we wish you all the happiness and fulfillment in the years ahead. Thank you!
