BAGSC member Monica Ray will be teaching a Two-day Workshop in Colored Pencil at the Inn of Cape May, New Jersey,
May 18 & 19, 2020.
Time: 10:00 am – 5:00 pm (with lunch break)
Cost of two-day workshop: $195.00 (includes packet of different papers and practice pieces)

Colored Pencil is a versatile medium and lends itself perfectly for nature’s treasures found on the beach, and local coastal plants, capturing their different textures and colors with relative ease. A work in colored pencil can be rendered as a drawing or be closely reminiscent of a work done in watercolor or oil. Learn the techniques for painting in colored pencil and some new tricks along the way.
This workshop is designed for all levels of students, either new or experienced at working in colored pencil. Through demonstrations, discussion of materials, handling properties and techniques, hands-on time, and individual attention, students will develop and improve their skills.
The workshop will be held at the Inn of Cape May (www.innofcapemay.com) in the lovely historic town of Cape May, New Jersey. The inn is right across from the beach overlooking the Atlantic Ocean.
On Tuesday, the 19th, an early morning nature walk in the local State Park with a knowledgeable naturalist has been planned—bring binoculars if you plan on attending. Besides drawing and painting, enjoy a stroll on the beach or boardwalk, explore the town, or simply indulge in a quiet moment sitting on the deck and watch a pod of dolphins, swim by in the distance.

Learn about the non-native invasive plants at the Madrona Marsh Preserve in Torrance, California. Participants will tour the nature preserve and select an invasive plant to use as their specimen. Participants can remove as many specimens from the preserve as they would like!
Additionally, BAGSC members are invited to submit works for the exhibition “Non-Native Invasive Plants of the Madrona Marsh” to be held in the summer of 2019, opening June 1 and running until August. Nina’s workshop is a great opportunity to get your artwork started for submission to this important exhibition.

Olga Eysymontt will be teaching two botanical art workshops this summer at the Los Angeles County Arboretum and Botanic Gardens (LA Arboretum) through the Extension Program at Otis College of Art and Design.
The first is a two-day drawing and painting workshop, “Heirloom Tomatoes in Watercolor/Colored Pencil.“ The focus for this workshop will be techniques for conveying the perception of light and shadow, mixing color and continuous tone. Prior experience in drawing botanical subject matter is helpful. A supply list is on the Otis workshop registration site (included on the link below):

If you love plants and like to draw, this workshop on botanical drawing is custom-made for you! Join instructor Cristina Baltayian for a three day workshop on drawing autumn leaves in colored pencil on wood.
Drawing is a fundamental skill in botanical art and its importance should never be underestimated. In these three days, you will:
- Hone your observation skills
- Be guided through sketching and line drawing exercises
- Discover how to arrange shapes on a page and make a pleasing composition
- Translate a 3-dimensional subject onto a 2-dimensional surface
This exploration in colored pencil on wood will show you how to start and finish a botanical portrait of a leaf. If your curiosity is piqued and you wish to investigate further, please join the on-going Tuesday Botanical Art classes from 10am-2pm.

Cristina Baltayian holds a Botanical Illustration Certificate from Cornell University. She has a background in drawing (graphite, charcoal, pen and ink), two-dimensional design, watercolor, and colored pencils. Her work is in public and private venues, and has been shown at Filoli, Los Angeles County Arboretum and Botanic Garden, Chapman University, Virginia Robinson Garden and in an adjunct Botanical Artists Guild of Southern California group exhibition presented by the botanical gardens at The Huntington Library, Art Collections and Gardens. She is a member of the American Society of Botanical Artists, and The Botanical Artists Guild of Southern California.

Our dear Jill Berry at the Los Angeles Arboretum will be retiring shortly. BAGSC sends out a BIG THANK YOU to Jill for all your years of help, service, and support.
Many of us got our start in botanical art at the LA Arboretum, in classes taught by Olga Eysymontt. Jill was a big part of our experience there, and we will miss her. Jill, congratulations on your retirement, and we wish you all the happiness and fulfillment in the years ahead. Thank you!
Our collaboration and support of the Arboretum will continue, of course. The schedule for Cristina Baltayian’s classes has been announced for January – June, 2015 at the Arboretum. These classes will be exploring color pencil, graphite, pen and ink, and watercolor on various papers, vellum and other surfaces. The emphasis will be on plant observation, drawing, composition, color theory and matching, and medium techniques.

The workshop on Monday, March 9–Tuesday, March 10, 2015 will be held at the Los Angeles Arboretum.
The workshop on Thursday, March 12–Friday, March 13, 2015 will be held at the Santiago Nature Center, in the Santiago Park Nature Reserve, freeway-close off of Memory Lane in Santa Ana, Orange County (near the Main Place mall).
Leslie Walker reports a good number of deposits have already come in, so for those of you who were waiting to see which location matched which dates, it’s time to send in your deposit. Maps, times and materials lists will be emailed once full payment has been received.

Costs will be $250.00 for a two-day workshop for BAGSC and Colored Pencil Society members, $275.00 for non-members. Save the dates for the week of March 9, 2015, when Eileen Sorg comes to teach a BAGSC-sponsored workshop, “COLORED PENCIL STEW” in Southern California.
This two-day workshop will teach you how to use pen and ink, watercolor, and colored pencil together to create richly detailed pieces of art. This mixed media approach allows for a quick build up of color and value while still leaving room for the beautiful detail and control of colored pencil. You will learn watercolor and colored pencil application tips, and how to extract the best qualities of each medium in this fun and informative workshop.
We are anticipating a high demand for Eileen’s workshop, and so may offer two, two-day classes back-to-back if the numbers are there. Member fee rates will be offered to BAGSC members and members of the Colored Pencil Society.

Many botanical artists come to their craft from the applied arts: textiles, jewelry, ceramics and more. BAGSC member Deb Shaw will be teaching two botanical art workshops at Bowers Museum in Santa Ana, California, in conjunction with the exhibition “A Quest for Beauty: The Art of Van Cleef & Arpels.” The workshops will be held on February 4 and February 11, 2014 and will explore using graphite, colored pencil and watercolor techniques. Classes will draw from live specimens, using the original drawings of flowers and jewelry on display in the Nature Gallery of the Van Cleef & Arpels exhibition as inspiration.
Enhance your experience by attending the optional 1 PM Gallery Talk and tour of the exhibition, led by Bowers Museum staff (20 minutes) and is free with class registration. Original drawings and paintings for designs are on display in addition to the spectacular jewelry, including many paintings with botanical themes.

“A Quest for Beauty: The Art of Van Cleef & Arpels” is a heritage exhibition spanning more than 100 years of history. The exhibition displays jewelry, watches, and precious accessories, as well as archive drawings and documents of the Place Vendôme High Jewelry Maison. More than 200 pieces from the private collections of Van Cleef & Arpels are on display. The exhibition is built around four themes that continue to inspire the Maison: Nature, Elegance, Exoticism and Femininity. The exhibition ends on February 15, 2014.
